From Welsh wind. To lower-carbon aluminium. To London's electric taxis.
Sourcing 100% renewable energy to support Norsk Hydro on its energy transition ambition to produce lower-carbon aluminium.*
The customer
Norsk Hydro, a leading global aluminium and renewable energy company.
The challenge
Having already started to reduce the carbon intensity of its products, Norsk Hydro needed a long-term energy partner to support its energy transition.鈥
The solution
鈥婼tarting from January 2024, Shell Energy will supply Norsk Hydro鈥檚 麻豆传媒 sites with natural gas and asset-specific REGO-certified 100% renewable electricity* from the Rhyl Flats wind farm in Wales. This renewable electricity will help power electric forklifts, automated cooling towers and energy harvesting, which in turn will enable Norsk Hydro to produce lower-carbon aluminium. Aluminium that will go on to be used in products like solar panels and London鈥檚 iconic LEVC electric taxis. Norsk Hydro is also developing a closed-loop system which will use these renewable energy sources. Where possible, the company reclaims products from its customer base that have had their useful life and require replacing or upgrading. This post-consumer scrap comes back into the Norsk Hydro system to be recycled into usable products with a lower-carbon footprint.

*Disclaimer:
Shell Energy鈥檚 renewable electricity is supplied by the National Grid and certified by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates, matching electricity bought with the equivalent amount from 100% renewable sources.
The purchase of REGO certificates can demonstrate a business鈥 appetite to invest in renewable energy. It is important to note, that when renewable energy is distributed through the grid, it is mixed with energy from non-renewable sources.
Rhyl Flats Wind Farm is the main site for the first 12 months of the contract. More information can be found here:
