Shell made its first move into the wind business more than 25 years ago. We continue to develop wind projects while maximising the value of our operational portfolio.
Our wind portfolio
Shell made its first move into the wind business over 25 years ago. Today, we have more than 2 gigawatts (GW) of wind capacity in operation and under construction globally.
In the spotlight
Borssele III & IV
Shell is part of the consortium that built and operates the Borssele III & IV wind farm off the Dutch coast. The 731.5 MW wind farm is designed to produce 3 TWh of power per year, equivalent to 2.5% of Dutch electricity demand. The wind farm became fully operational in February 2021, amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ensuring safe operations and protecting the environment are key for the partners. Van Oord鈥檚 FaunaGuard, an innovative device that uses specific underwater acoustics, was used to proactively repel marine life during construction. To reduce underwater noise during installation, Van Oord鈥檚 offshore vessel Aeolus was equipped with the AdBm Noise Mitigation System. Blauwwind is also participating in a pilot to place flat oysters on some of the monopiles to see whether oysters can establish themselves permanently in the wind farm and attract new marine life. Hollandse Kust (noord)
Shell and Eneco are part of the consortium, which in July 2020 was awarded the tender for the subsidy free offshore wind farm Hollandse Just (noord). and added 759 MW of renewable energy to the Dutch electricity grid after final commissioning. The completion of Hollandse Kust Noord project also helped the Netherlands achieve a target of more than 4.5 GW of offshore wind generation capacity by the end of 2023.
With Hollandse Kust Noord, CrossWind has built a subsidy-free wind park that is expected to produce at least 3.3 TWh of electricity. This corresponds to 2.8 percent of electricity demand in the Netherlands. Hollandse Kust Noord, together with other offshore wind farms including Borssele and Hollandse Kust Zuid, currently supply 15.8 percent of the Netherlands' electricity needs, a goal that was agreed more than 10 years ago in the Dutch Energy Agreement in its 鈥淩oadmap 2023鈥.
In 2021, Amazon signed an agreement with the Crosswind consortium to purchase 380 MW of power from Hollandse Kust (noord). The electricity generated by the wind farm will be also used to produce renewable hydrogen at Shell鈥檚 Holland Hydrogen I, Europe鈥檚 largest renewable hydrogen plant once operational.

Hollandse Kust (noord), Netherlands
Shell is a 60% shareholder in the . In December 2022, Shell and Eneco were awarded the tender for the subsidy-free offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust West (VI). The 760-megawatt (MW) wind farm, located 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast, is being constructed with a minimal impact on nature. It is expected to produce 3.3 TWh of power per year, equivalent to about 3% of Dutch electricity demand.
Pottendijk, Netherlands
Pottendijk is Shell鈥檚 first hybrid onshore wind and solare park in the Netherlands, comprising 14 onshore wind turbines and 90,000 solar panels.

Whitewater Hill, California, USA
Shell co-owns Whitewater Hill with US renewables company Terra-Gen. The wind farm located north-west of Palm Springs, California, has an installed capacity of 61.5 megawatts.
Cabazon, California, USA
Cabazon, also co-owned with Terra-Gen, is a 41-megawatt wind farm located in the San Gorgonio Pass west of Palm Springs, California.
Brazos, Texas, USA
Brazos Wind Farm is located in Fluvanna, Texas, 112 kilometres south-east of Lubbock, on the Caprock of the Llano Estacado. Shell is a 40% owner and operator of Brazos. The wind farm produces 182 megawatts, enough energy to power more than 67,000 households.
