Renewable power
Renewable power is playing an increasingly important role in the transition to net-zero emissions and in supporting energy security. Selective investments in renewable generation and storage systems, combined with our power trading and sales expertise, allow us to create more value with less emissions.
Shell鈥檚 power business
We are evolving our power business, applying the knowledge, skills and experience gained in power markets across the globe.

In addition to serving our customers, we use renewable power to decarbonise our own operations.
At the start of 2025, we had around 3.4 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power generation capacity in operation, 4 GW under construction/contract and an attractive potential pipeline of renewable and flexible generation projects globally for future development.
What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy comes from natural sources that are constantly replenished, such as sunlight and wind.
Despite the benefits that renewable energy offers for reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change, society is not at a stage when it can switch completely to renewables. Power from sources like wind and the sun fluctuates, depending on the weather. In selected markets, we see increasing value in using batteries and flexible gas-fired power plants to manage intermittency and help us meet customer needs as renewables play increasing role in power markets.
Types of renewable energy sources
There are all sorts of natural energy sources available, such as wind, solar, marine and biomass. Below are two types of renewable energy in which Shell is investing.
