Shell Thiopave to Help Offset Customers' CO2 Liability
Customers in Alberta, Canada can apply for carbon credits when using Shell Thiopave.
Shell is committed to helping customers use less energy and emit less CO2, and from December 2009, customers using Shell Thiopave in Alberta, Canada, can apply to claim carbon credits after the Alberta Government issued a new protocol approving carbon offsets generated by projects using sulphur enhanced asphalt technologies.
Approval of this offset protocol by the Alberta Government comes after more than a year鈥檚 rigorous review, comparing the environmental profile of conventional asphalt and sulphur enhanced asphalt in Alberta. The lifecycle analysis underpinning this review showed that through a combination of partial bitumen replacement, lower asphalt manufacturing temperatures, and close proximity to sulphur resources, sulphur enhanced asphalt in Alberta has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions in the order of 0.4t CO2 per tonne of Shell Thiopave used in the asphalt mix.
The CO2 savings generated can be used by regulated greenhouse gas emitters in Alberta as offsets to help meet their regulated CO2 limits. Currently such offsets are traded in Alberta at close to C$15/tonne CO2. Customers in Alberta who wish to make CO2 offset claims under this new protocol should contact their local Shell Thiopave representative to discuss how to do this.
