At the racetrack

How Shell is delivering and implementing innovations at the racetrack that are designed to help decarbonise Formula One.

Carbon Neutral Generator Fuel鹿

From 2021 onwards, Shell started providing Scuderia Ferrari with a biofuel that is made from 60% renewable feedstock, such as agricultural waste or used cooking oils, and 40% Shell GTL in their trackside generators at all European races. This fuel can help reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to the convention diesel fuel used previously2, thereby powering the operations at the track in a cleaner way. This fuel can also help reduce the emissions of air pollutants, contributing to improved local air quality and a cleaner paddock environment. For unavoidable emissions, Shell will purchase carbon offsets to reach carbon neutral1.

Track lab two

Shell always has a mobile Track Lab, where its scientists ensure that the fuel and lubricants are ready and tested for the race. In 2021, Shell has given its trackside laboratory a refresh for 2021, using lightweight materials throughout to improve weight-saving capabilities across overall transportation as the laboratory travels around the world, thus lowering the carbon emissions associated with transportation. This new trackside laboratory saves around 64kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), which is comparable charging over 7 million smartphones.3 Effort has also been made to minimise waste by using recycled materials, including a floor made entirely from recycled rubber, and natural fibres used for panels and drawers, as well as sustainable leather for chair coverings.

Supporting the Zandvoort Dutch Grand Prix

Shell鈥檚 mission is to deliver and implement innovations at the track that are intended to help the sport reach Net Zero Carbon. Together with Circuit Zandvoort at the Formula One Heineken Dutch Grand Prix, Shell is committed to delivering motorsport events in a cleaner way.

Shell supports the Circuit Zandvoort by supplying all event generators with Shell GTL (gas-to-liquids) fuel. Derived from natural gas, this alternative diesel burns more cleanly than conventional crude oil-based diesel, resulting in a reduction of local emissions. There is no additional investment as Shell GTL is a drop-in fuel that can be used in existing diesel engines without the need for modifications, new infrastructure, or vehicle investment. It has also been classified as non-toxic, odourless, readily biodegradable and has a low hazard rating, being a paraffinic fuel.4

Shell also provides cleaner mobility transportation for its guests, using electric vehicles powered by 100% renewable electricity provided by Shell Recharge as well as cars fuelled with Shell Hydrogen.

Shell is also proud to partner with local organisations in and around the Circuit Zandvoort to jointly invest in reforestation projects across the Netherlands. For example, Shell and forestry partner Staatsbosbeheer will jointly plant 5 million trees in Dutch forests over the next 12 years, while Shell is also investing a total of 鈧17.4 million in the Buitenfonds for this purpose. In addition, Shell will work together in the field of knowledge exchange, education and innovation.

Shell will offset all lifecycle CO2 emissions of the fuel products it provides to the Dutch Grand Prix through Shell Nature Based Solutions to help the generator energy supply achieve a carbon neural footprint.1

Shell鈥檚 long-term commitment to motorsport

Shell is constantly working with Scuderia Ferrari and other partners to define how lower carbon fuels can be developed to enable a cleaner future, including using advanced renewable biofuels and synthetic liquid fuels, both of which can help meet Formula One鈥檚 ambition to introduce fully sustainable race fuels. These learnings and technologies, put to test on the track, could eventually be used to reduce emissions on the road.

Carbon neutral indicates that Shell has engaged in a transaction where an amount of CO鈧 equivalent to the CO鈧俥 amount associated with the raw material extraction, transport, production, distribution and usage of the Shell GTL fuel has been avoided as emissions through the protection of natural ecosystems or removed from the atmosphere through a nature-based process.
