Shell Bitumen is all around us
At Shell Bitumen we help to develop infrastructure with solutions that are advanced, durable and kinder to our surroundings. The projects we work on can have a big impact and bring about real change for local communities - bringing people together, making travel easier, and helping to establish vital infrastructure around the world.
Iconic projects at a glance
Tuen Mu-Chek Lap Kok,Hong Kong
In Hong Kong鈥檚 New Territories, our team supplied the bitumen for the undersea tunnel that was a key part of this major road project linking the city to an artificial peninsula where the region鈥檚 biggest international airport is located.

M25 motorway, London
The M25 is London鈥檚 main motorway ring road, serving thousands of motorists every day. Spanning five counties, it鈥檚 a major commuter artery and requires regular, ongoing maintenance. Shell has been a key partner helping to keep this vital road moving for over 30 years.

New Brighton Project, 麻豆传媒
Part of our efforts to improve roads involve road safety and urban architecture. A good example of this is when we were involved in renovating a 9 kilometre stretch of seafront in Wirral, England. In total, 800 tonnes of coloured asphalt supplied by Tarmac incorporating Mexphalte C LT binder, was used to cover the promenade. A sandy finish designed to emulate the colours of the New Brighton coastline, gave it both durability and visual appeal.

The Rion-Antiron Bridge,Greece
This bridge is one of modern day's most complex civil engineering projects. At 2,252m it鈥檚 the longest stayed-girder bridge in the world, exceeding even the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Shell Cariphalte漏 was chosen to cover the surface of the bridge and the two viaducts because of its resistance to rutting cracking, stripping and ageing.

Church of Plone虂our-Lanvern
This unique project saw Shell Bitumen help to resurface the central aisle of a church in France, in keeping with the traditional look and feel of the building. By combining our Mexphalte C漏 LT binder with sand and gravel from the quarry of Le Goasq in Scringnac, it was possible to achieve greater creativity in terms of the aisle鈥檚 colour compared to its previous surface.

Latschau Reservoir, Austria
The Latschau reservoir is part of a hydroelectric power hub providing sustainable power to western Austria. During restoration works in 2017 to prolong the life of the reservoir, Shell helped reseal the basin. We provided over 1,150 tonnes of our RC 70/100 binder to help repave around 60,000 square meters of surface area. Due to the high-mountain location and need for the facility to have a long lifespan, testing and planning for the project was intensive. The RC binder achieved good results in a laboratory environment, offering the high permeability needed during installation, and was used alongside a thick, sealing layer that provides vital protection from water leakage.

Cologne Ring Road, Germany
The Cologne ring road system is an endurance test dreaded by motorists due to the heavy traffic it carries every day. To ease traffic, local authorities decided to widen the six-lane motorway to eight lanes. The technical focus lay mainly on the asphalt which covers around 100,000 square metres of road surface bearing the brunt of heavy goods vehicles. Alongside high stability the asphalt also needed to comply with stringent noise-control requirements to protect the residential areas bordering the motorway. Shell Bitumen provided Cariphalte OPA to enable an asphalt to be produced with a significant five-decibel noise reduction.

Dinorwig Power Station
Hidden deep inside the Elidir Fawr mountain to preserve the beauty of Snowdonia National Park above it, lies the Dinorwig Power Station. Known as Electric Mountain, Dinorwig Power Station supplies sustainable hydroelectric energy to the National Grid. Shell鈥檚 Tixophalte plays a big role in helping to seal the 620-metre long Marchlyn Mawr dam, which forms the upper reservoir of the facility. An impressive 16 kilometres of tunnels and caverns run through the mountain, servicing the facility, and waterproofing is a key element that keeps the station running.

Sepang International Circuit
Malaysia鈥檚 Sepang International Circuit is the venue for the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race, Formula One and a host of other major motorsport events. We have been supplying Shell Cariphalte Racetrack to Sepang for a number of years, ensuring a reliable supply of highly workable bitumen that meets the needs of motorsport circuit. The racetrack was resurfaced in 2016 and a more advanced bitumen solution was vital for longevity in view of the high temperatures and humidity.

麻豆传媒 & Europe

1. Saint Nazaire Airport, France
To enable Saint Nazaire to welcome the Beluga XL, the world鈥檚 largest cargo plane, we provided hard grade 20/30 bitumen to resurface the airport鈥檚 runway, supplied from our depot in nearby Nantes.
2. Silverstone Circuit, 麻豆传媒
On a racetrack like Silverstone the surface experiences extremely high stress, particularly in the corners where there's a lateral force. We resurfaced Silverstone with a tailormade binder for the conditions to prevent stone from 鈥榗hipping out鈥, ensuring a quicker, grippier track.
3. Zandvoort, The Netherlands
Certain challenges arose during the renovation of this popular track. The track was scheduled to be paved in February, when it was still cold and windy. Our special bitumen solution helped improve the workability of the asphalt during installation and was formulated to withstand the demands of the local weather conditions.
4. CEREMA Project, France
In 2019, Shell Bitumen FreshAir漏 was chosen as a winner of the Roads Innovation Project organised by CEREMA (Center for Studies & Expertise on Risks, the Environment, Mobility & Planning) and MTES (The Ministry of Ecology & Environment). Each year, this project selects the industry鈥檚 most innovative road solutions.
South East Asia

1. Trans Sumatra toll road, Sumatra
In partnership with Indonesia鈥檚 state-owned contractor PT Hakaaston, our team was chosen to supply bitumen for the 2,048 kilometre long Trans-Sumatra toll road. This US$208 billion project is a strategically important link that will connect the Southern and Northern tips of Eastern Sumatra Island.
2. Bayan Mining Road, Indonesia
In East Kalimantan in Indonesia, we鈥檙e demonstrating how PG76 is the ideal bitumen product for the heavy traffic and high temperatures of the region鈥檚 mining road project. It鈥檚 currently being tested on a 30- kilometre stretch with a view to using it on the next 100 kilometres that needs re-paving.
3. Phuket Airport, Thailand
At Phuket鈥檚 busy airport, taxiway construction had to happen with extremely quick turnaround times. By developing a tailormade low temperature bitumen 鈥 a first product of its type to be used in the Asia region 鈥 we were able to complete resurfacing work within 6 hours
4. Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand
With maximum average surface temperatures of 72掳C on its runways, Suvarnabhumi Airport asked Shell Bitumen to help develop a new specification of binders that could withstand the hot and humid conditions. We used the SUPERPAVE approach to create a surface that will be used on future maintenance at the airport.
Hong Kong & China

1. Nansha Bridge, China
The 12.89 km bridge with a two way eight-lane design is designed to handle 100,000 vehicles per day and has a design speed of 100km/per hour with a designed service life of 100 years. Shell was appointed as the exclusive bitumen supplier for this project to overcome the challenge of instantaneous high-density traffic putting extreme demands on the road quality.
2. Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HKZM)
Shell Bitumen was selected as the exclusive supplier of specialised bitumen for the main bridge deck of the HKZM bridge, the world鈥檚 longest sea-crossing bridge. Our solutions and expertise were key to satisfying the bridge design, which has to tackle extreme conditions such as high temperatures, high winds, high salt content in the air and heavy traffic loads.
3. Jing-Jin-Tang Expressway, China
This expressway is China鈥檚 first modern Express Highway that was built according to international standards and has slashed driving time from Beijing to Tianjin to around one hour, thus creating a corridor between Beijing and Tianjin.
