How did you come to join Shell as a software engineer?

By the time I had graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering in 2008, I’d already been selected through a campus interview as a .Net and SharePoint developer for a multinational technology services and consulting company. Soon after was a stint at another tech giant. I left 4 years later, by which time I had become team lead. While I was in the second company, a few colleagues who had worked on the Shell account talked about how the company was revolutionising its tech division. As soon as I heard they were expanding their Bangalore team, I jumped at the chance to apply. Not only did I want to switch from a service to a product company, but it also felt like a matter of pride to be a member of a renowned global organisation like Shell.

What would you say is the best part about your role at Shell?

I’m currently one of the decision makers on a customer service chatbot project, responsible for ensuring smooth delivery as well as maintaining our standards and practices. I’d have to say it’s both the people and the technology I work with that are fascinating. We work with about six to eight various Shell business units, integrating their solutions with our chatbot. Collaborating with my business counterparts across the world is quite a cultural experience. And my work ensures I’m always neck-deep in the latest technology stack which I love.

I put all my best efforts into the work I do. It’s because my line managers trust me that I have been able to work on various business-critical projects. As for the future, one possibility is my progression to a Solutions Architect. I want to move into higher roles, but I’d like to continue working hands-on with new technology.

One of the best parts of working with Shell is that I’m able to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Sometimes you have to stretch in times of crisis, but our health and safety are always foremost at Shell. Taking care of people is a priority, and that care has made me more mindful of health and safety with my family too.

What do you think the future of Shell has in store for you?

I talked about why, as a software engineer, I switched from a job at a technology company to an energy company. Contrary to my earliest expectations, Shell is doing a much better job scaling up its technical expertise than most actual technology companies. There’s certainly no lack of exposure for us on the development side.

I’ve been seeing Shell gradually making these technological upgrades over the last few years. It’s already transitioning again, taking the time to analyse and make changes very carefully at every step. Shell might be the place to be when it comes to testing new concepts and scaling up technology projects.
