Supporting new market development

As one of the world鈥檚 leading suppliers of LNG, we continue to support countries as they develop LNG import facilities and connect to the global gas market.

An evening in Hanoi is a time of dynamic energy and bustling activity. As the sun sets, its night markets come to life with the glow of streetlights and illuminated signs, the delicious aroma of warm broths wafting from food stalls, and the animated chatter of shoppers buying beautifully handcrafted products. Amid this captivating scene, it's important to recognise the role energy plays in creating this unique cultural experience as well as sustaining the country鈥檚 impressive economic growth over the past decades.

There are multiple reasons for Vietnam鈥檚 remarkable development over the last 40 years and access to electricity is one of them. To meet its rapidly increasing demand for electricity in its towns and villages and to power its global manufacturing industry, the country is turning to natural gas imports.

In July 2023, Shell was proud to deliver the first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to commission Vietnam's new LNG regasification terminal.

Today, for an increasing number of countries, LNG imports are needed to generate sufficient electricity and enable them to reduce reliance on coal, notably in Asia. In 2023, Shell also delivered its first cargoes to the Philippines and Hong Kong. The LNG delivered will help supplement limited domestic resources and enable gas to play an important role in providing the lower-carbon electricity that these communities need.

Gas is also helping to progress a balanced energy transition in other regions. For example, Shell signed a long-term agreement to supply LNG to the Kingdom of Morocco. Gas is an important component of the country鈥檚 electricity mix as it offers the flexibility needed to balance increasing generation from renewable sources.

Shell is working to deliver more and cleaner energy solutions to meet the needs of customers around the world, whether that鈥檚 natural gas, low-carbon fuels or renewable power.

LNG is helping to bring the benefits of cleaner-burning gas to markets all over the world. As one of the world鈥檚 leading suppliers of LNG, we continue to support countries as they develop LNG import facilities and connect to the global gas market. In the past we have supplied first LNG cargoes to places like Dubai, Jordan, Kuwait, Malta and Gibraltar.
