Northern Nutrients and Shell Thiogro technology to bring novel fertiliser offerings to farmers in Saskatchewan and across Canada
The sulphur enhanced urea fertiliser manufacturing facility, located outside of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, utilises Shell Thiogro* technology to produce Artic-S, a patented process for the incorporation of micronized elemental sulphur into urea, resulting in a sulphur form that is available to plants across the growing season.
Building and starting up a new facility in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic was of course challenging, but Northern Nutrients and the Shell Sulphur Solutions business persisted in the accelerated timeline to deliver the new facility which reflects the anticipated market response of the product.
"Despite a very challenging construction environment due to covid, we are very pleased that we were able to produce limited tonnes this spring of Artic-S. Moving forward we believe this plant will serve North American retailers and growers well by providing high quality locally made sources of sulphur enhanced nitrogen." said Ross Guenther, Northern Nutrients CEO and Owner.
鈥淣orthern Nutrients and the Shell Sulphur Solutions business have partnered for the installation of Shell鈥檚 Thiogro technology in Canada. This new installation will deliver sulphur-rich urea fertilisers to growers whose crop production is essential to the increasing nutrition and energy requirements around the world. Northern Nutrients is a valued addition to the group of Thiogro licensees: Fertiliser producers around the globe who are committed to enhance the efficiencies of the agricultural system and delivering high-performing products to farmers.鈥 said Peter Zissos, GM Shell Global Sulphur & Thiogro.
The new product, Artic-S, was commercially available in limited volume this spring and is expected to be widely commercially available across North America for the fall of 2022.
As part of Sectors & Decarbonization - Agriculture & Forestry, the Shell Sulphur Solutions business and Shell Thiogro technologies will continue to play a vital role thriving through the energy transition. As demonstrated with Northern Nutrients, by being the partner of choice in offering sustainable and integrated solutions to solve challenges across Agriculture & Forestry value chains, accelerating the transition to net zero emissions.
