Shell remains supplier of engine oil to the BMW Group in Asia and RoW
Hamburg 鈥 Shell has renewed its partnership with the BMW Group in the Rest of World (RoW) and Asia clusters. It will continue to supply the aftersales business of all BMW Group brands as the exclusive producer and supplier of engine oil to these regions until 2027.
The renewal of the partnership between the BMW Group and Shell covers more than 150 countries worldwide. It has also been extended in Asia up to and including 2026. The Asian business, with markets such as China, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan, accounts for a significant share of the BMW Group's global engine-oil business in the downstream maintenance and service business. Shell exclusively supplies the business for passenger cars and motorcycles.
Philipp Martini, General Manager Automotive (West) at Shell: "We are delighted to continue our partnership with the BMW Group and to remain the recommended supplier for the aftersales engine-oil business. This allows us to optimally bundle competencies and develop customized engine oils."
Close cooperation allows for high performance standard
Shell and the BMW Group develop engine oils in close cooperation. This enables industry standards for engine oils, such as the ACEA specifications from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, to be exceeded.
The latest high-performance engines come with demanding operating conditions. As a result, the demands on engine oils have also increased to ensure maximum performance and protect the engine from wear. The joint development enables the oils to be individually adapted to the engines.
In cooperation with the BMW Group, a new product called LL22FE++ 0W-12 was developed to reduce the consumption of current and future-generation combustion engines. The LL19FE 0W-30 simplifies the use of low-viscosity Original 0W products for BMW Group dealers, as it is also compatible with older-generation engines that have been filled at the factory with LL04 5W-30 and LL04 0W-30.
Reducing CO鈧 emissions with optimized processes
Original BMW Group engine oils meet the latest engine specifications of the BMW Group brands and are largely based on Shell PurePlus Technology, in which base oils are produced from natural gas using synthesis technology. Base oils account for up to 80 percent of the lubricant and are therefore the key components in every premium engine oil. The mixture is characterized by improved viscosity properties, reduced friction, and less evaporation and which means lower oil consumption.
In the ongoing partnership, Shell is optimizing the lubricants鈥 packaging material. To reduce the consumption of resources, Shell has converted the 1L bottles for the BMW Group in Europe to 40 percent PCR (recycled plastic). The 2L bottles for certain other BMW Group brands have been converted to 40 percent PCR combined with 60 percent biomaterial, resulting in significant plastic savings.
