Shell Lubricants publishes whitepaper: ‘Breaking New Ground: Shaping a Successful Future for Mining’
New whitepaper explores how miners can overcome operational challenges and help to create a sustainable future.
Mining plays a critical role in delivering the materials that underpin many global industries and it is actively supporting our transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and the development of renewable energy sources (including wind turbines and solar panels), meaning it is at the heart of a more sustainable, advanced, and digitalised world.
However, miners face the challenge of accessing mineral and metal deposits, which is becoming harder and more hazardous, driving the need for innovation and digitalisation within mining. They also need to reduce the carbon intensity of their operations, and address the inefficiencies of legacy processes, to decarbonise.
To add to the challenge, and as Shell’s latest ‘Voice of the Customer’ study of 561 mining industry decision makers shows, cost is still king. The rising cost of consumables used in mining is a key factor, alongside pressure from shareholders to improve profitability – suggesting sustainability is only possible if miners can increase their efficiency and productivity at the same time.
Chen Li, GM Off-Highway at Shell Lubricants said: “Mining has an opportunity to transform itself – becoming more efficient and more sustainable while helping other sectors to achieve their decarbonisation goals.
“However, no single company can do it alone. Which is why, at Shell, we are building on our track record of innovation and adding value to industrial operations to help miners overcome their specific challenges. Together, we can help the mining sector meet growing industry demand, deliver on its commercial goals, and become a driving force behind global decarbonisation efforts.”
Shell works closely with customers and partners across the industry – as demonstrated by our role in providing total cost of ownership savings and biodegradable lubricants, our participation in industry-wide events, and our Shell LubeExpert services for early detection of equipment failure – to deliver solutions that improve the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of mine sites around the world.
