What Energy Transition Means to Shell Catalysts & Technologies

A Mandate from Paris with Global Power
The Paris Agreement marks an unprecedented alliance of governments and resources dedicated to addressing climate change and promoting a new era of energy transition. The goal of the Agreement is to keep the increase in the global average temperature rise to well below 2°C from pre-industrial levels.
This is one of the most significant challenges that we face as an international society. Together, the global economy, local governments, and the energy industry must align their capabilities, expertise, and political will to pursue this complex initiative.
Shell is a big company and we supply around 3% of the energy the world uses. We want to play our part and contribute to the global effort to tackle climate change as we provide energy that the world needs.
We must also have a sustainable business model that is in tune with our customers. Shell cannot continue to be financially successful if it does not work toward these goals. To that end, Shell decided to set itself a challenging ambition.
Shell Catalysts & Technologies Energy Transition Goals
We intend to cut the carbon intensity of the energy products we sell, in step with society as it moves towards the goal of the Paris Agreement. That means fewer greenhouse gases emitted on average with each unit of energy we sell – by around 20% by 2035 and by around half by 2050.
In 2016, Shell launched a New Energies business to focus our efforts and to explore new commercial opportunities and technologies that will deliver these emissions goals and capabilities. To date, Shell has invested billions of dollars in a range of low-carbon technologies, including biofuels, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen and wind power to advance this energy transition goal.

Advanced Natural Gas Solutions
Shell Catalysts & Technologies is a committed and powerful player in the energy transition. We believe that natural gas technologies can help deliver a cleaner energy future.
Natural gas emits between 45% and 55% lower greenhouse gas versus coal in generating electricity, according to International Energy Agency (IEA) data; and, natural gas has less than one-tenth of the air pollutants – including sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, particulate and heavy metals – when used to fuel transport, heat homes, and power industry.
To us, natural gas offers a practical stepping stone to a cleaner future.
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Technologies
Shell LNG, with technology support from Shell Catalysts and Technologies, can impact more than 30% of the global LNG capacity. Shell’s deep expertise provides an opportunity for project owners and developers to benefit from Shell’s 50 years of valuable LNG experience within a broad range of technology applications.
Explore Shell LNG Technologies
For instance, Shell’s gas treating technology can remove contaminants from to streamline operational efficiency and address the facility’s environmental obligations. By providing customers with the most advanced integrated design approaches, equipment, and industry expertise, we’re building a cleaner future.
Another example of our value proposition to customers is Shell’s Dual Mixed Refrigerant Technology (DMR) which improves LNG production in challenging ambient conditions while optimising safety, efficiency, heat integration, plot space, CO2 emissions, and operability.

The Collective Power of Integrating Solutions
Shell Catalysts & Technologies is passionate about innovating traditional refinery processes and helping customers reach their goal for a lower-carbon future. Our experience and knowledge tell us that the greatest achievements will be the result of close partnerships built on shared values and objectives.
Oftentimes, these solutions are the result of integrating knowledge, ideas, technologies, and equipment. For example, Shell Catalysts & Technologies has an extensive portfolio of dynamic energy-efficient services that include decarbonisation technologies, energy-efficient catalysts, modern carbon capture, fouling abatement, and renewable fuels.
Our employees are committed to adapting, innovating, and participating in the global drive to provide more and cleaner energy solutions for a sustainable tomorrow. From advanced license technologies and catalysts to refinery hardware, Shell Catalysts & Technologies has the unique opportunity to play an integral role in the future of energy.
We’re helping to move the industry forward. Our cutting-edge Ǵڳܱ, chemical and refining catalysts, and a spectrum of evolving technologies serve new emissions regulations and the global effort to decarbonise the global economy.
The challenges of climate change as set out by the Paris Agreement in 2016 are real and formidable. However, we can be a powerful lever for change, especially if we work together to create a cleaner and more sustainable destiny for the world of energy.
