Career
Leena has dedicated her career to sustainability research and policy matters, and has held positions on boards of scale. She was Deputy Director General for Science at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. Prior to this, she was an Executive Director at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), a not-for-profit policy research organisation working on energy, environment and sustainable development, and then Vice Chancellor of the TERI School of Advanced Studies 鈥 a research university focused on sustainability education based in India. Leena is a member of the UN Technical Advisory Group on SDG 7, a Scientific Advisory Board Member of the European Forum Alpbach, and an advisory Board Member of NAMTECH, an Indian technical education institute. She has served committees and organisations at international and national levels, including as energy and climate adviser for the United Nations and Member of the Advisory Committee at Future Earth. She has also been a non-executive director of companies, including companies involved in manufacturing and infrastructure.
Relevant skills and experience
Leena has served on sustainability advisory boards of multinational companies, such as The Coca-Cola Company, Caterpillar Inc. and Suez Environment. She recognises the challenges large organisations face in managing stakeholder priorities, including balancing business, government and societal needs, while pursuing a sustainability agenda. As a member of the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, she provided a pragmatic perspective on how to support the sector through its decarbonisation journey. She has a strong network of relationships in multiple global institutions focused on sustainability and an understanding of the issues the energy sector faces.
