Our people and locations in technology

Shell’s technology community is a global network of over 3,000 colleagues, spread across more than 90 locations. Our three major technology development hubs are in the USA, the Netherlands and India, with additional sites in countries such as China and Germany. At our technology hubs, Shell continually innovates, by taking ideas from concept to customer thus enabling those customers to transition faster.

We are developing cutting-edge technologies that aim to compete an ever-changing and challenging context, such as our CANSOLV technology to capture CO₂, as well as advanced energy storage, hydrogen and e-mobility solutions.

Additionally, we leverage capabilities such as high-performance cloud computing and digital solutions in our oil and gas businesses, for example by doubling the speed of seismic data processing.

In 2023, Shell allocated around 49% of the total R&D spend to proving and scaling low-carbon products and services, demonstrating our commitment to transition to a lower-carbon future.

Shell’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) collaborates closely with our Chief Scientists to deliver innovative technologies that support project development and business growth. Through the Shell Science Council, our CTO and Chief Scientists come together with leading external scientists and technology experts from top universities and institutes to help Shell stay at the forefront of energy technology innovation.
