Shell has set itself the target to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, in step with society and our customers.

Making that transition to a low-carbon energy future, while also extending the benefits of energy to everyone on the planet, requires changes in the way energy is produced, used and made accessible. Novel, innovative technologies and solutions are needed. And to advance the research, development and commercialisation of new technologies, collaboration is key.

Shell GameChanger exists to foster collaboration between start-ups with early stage (energy-related) technologies and solutions, and experts within Shell. We do that in three ways:

• Through the GameChanger Programme, we help start-ups prove the commercial viability of their technologies and solutions. We provide support, access to the expertise in Shell, and seed funding as we together work towards a proof of concept. Interested? You can contact us here.
• Working with internal and external business partners, we release specific business-inspired Calls for Solutions. Active calls can be found at the top of this page.
• GameChanger takes part in strategic alliances and collaboration programmes that exist to stimulate both local and international start-up ecosystems.

We believe in the power of partnerships and collaboration. Since its establishment in 1996, Shell GameChanger has contributed to an open and connected global start-up ecosystem, working with start-ups, research institutions and accelerator programmes.

Some of our longer-standing partnerships are with:

• The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which is part of the United States Department of Energy. Together with NREL, we developed and continue to run GCxN, a multimillion-dollar, multiyear accelerator programme. Early-stage companies are admitted into the GCxN programme on the recommendation of the Channel Partners network of Cleantech incubators, accelerators and universities. .
• Shell Gamechanger and Shell Ventures partner with YES!Delft, Rockstart and Unknown Group: companies that support start-up development. Together we organise the New Energy Challenge (NEC), a competition for startups and scaleups in renewable energy. The winning companies may be awarded a collaboration or funding to further scale their business. Read more about the New Energy Challenge .
• Shell is a longtime Terawatt Partner of , the largest climatetech startup incubator in North America. Shell has engaged in three  startup-corporate partnerships accelerators to advance climate technologies, served as a founding partner of Greentown's Boston and Houston incubators, led Series A investment rounds and Shell GameChanger opportunities for Greentown member companies, and more. • And of course internal partners are key. GameChanger maintains strong relationships with each of Shell鈥檚 core businesses. The expertise of these business partners is a crucial differentiator, one that makes the GameChanger programme a unique experience for participating start-ups. We also work closely with other Shell initiatives, such as , an India-focused incubator programme, and Shell Ventures, our corporate venture fund. Where GameChanger focuses on early-stage start-ups, Shell Ventures is focused on companies that are further in their development.

Our team of experts evaluates technologies to check for a match with the programme against four key criteria:

1. Novelty: is your technology fundamentally different and unproven?
2. Value: could your technology create substantial new value if it works?
3. 鈥淲hy Shell?鈥�: is your technology relevant to Shell and the energy future?
4. Testing: can the concept be proven quickly and affordably? Is the right team in place to deliver this?

These seven steps illustrate how your journey with Shell GameChanger could look like:

1. Submission: Submit your early-stage technology solution as part of a Call for Solutions, or as an open submission here.
   
2. Screening: A GameChanger member will reach out to validate the potential fit with the programme and may involve identified experts.
3. Maturation: You will be invited to join a framing workshop in which we will work together to detail out a phased project plan
4. Extended panel: You will have 30 mins to pitch your proposal to a mixed panel, followed by Q&A and ultimately the funding decision.
5. Contracting: Companies in the programme are asked to adopt a 鈥榳in-win鈥� spirit from the start, but now it needs to go on paper.
6. Execution: A typical project has 2-3 phases and lasts 12-18 months. The results of each phase are discussed at so called 鈥渢ollgate panels鈥�.
7. Graduation: On project completion there will be a close-out panel.
