The Shell Bitumen business first emerged when there were more horses on roads than cars. As assembly lines and mass production of vehicles became more commonplace, the need for better-quality roads grew. We鈥檝e been helping to build roads and infrastructure ever since. 

From starting at scale our bitumen production at Shell Haven refinery in the United Kingdom in 1920 to current research into more sustainable materials, we鈥檝e consistently brought change to the industry through innovation and insight.

Here are some examples of how our products help make an impact around the world

Shell Cariphalte^庐 Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) can be formulated to tackle challenges like resisting deformation and shear stresses or providing better adhesion with aggregates than a conventional bitumen. It鈥檚 the perfect material for the renovation of Circuit Zandvoort where a cold and coastal climate puts the track under greater threat of failure. 

Thai roads can be extremely busy, so replacing them quickly and minimising emissions in the process made the country a great place to test Shell Bitumen FreshAir^庐, which reduces levels of sulphur oxides (SOX), nitrogen oxides (NOX), particulate matter (PM₁₀ and PM_2.5) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC_s) by 40% during production and road paving.  

Designed to provide a clear delineation between lanes of traffic in order to improve flow and safety especially during the Beijing Olympics, Shell鈥檚 Mexphalte^庐 C colour binder was used to create red asphalt bus lanes on key routes throughout the city, combining durability with visual functionality and aesthetic appeal. 

Shell Bitumen鈥檚 product portfolio extends to waterproofing and even underwater solutions. Shell Flintkote^庐 Bridgecoat was used on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge as a sealant which can withstand even wet and humid conditions, a key factor for the tunnel sections of this iconic project.

Formulated to create seamless barriers that keep water out, Shell Flintkote^庐 provides a high resistance to weathering, and is ideal for protecting steelworks. It has been used in some of Indonesia鈥檚 most recognisable buildings, including Equity Tower, Gandaria City Mall and World Trade Centre.
