Sketch: A US net-zero CO鈧� energy system by 2050
Shell has explored what it might take to decarbonize the US energy system. What needs to happen, who needs to participate and how can the US accelerate action and play a global leadership role in the energy transition?
Building on our Sky Scenario, the Shell Scenarios team has outlined a possible pathway for the US to achieve a net-zero CO2 emissions energy system by 2050. Make no mistake, achieving it will not be easy.
It calls for fundamental changes to the US energy system at a pace of change that will be highly challenging. However, given the progress to date and the changes seen in just the last decade, we believe it is economically and technically possible.
This transformation will require cross-sector industry coalitions, with a clear mission to reduce emissions and accelerate the pace of change. And crucially, it will take鈥痯olicy frameworks to align interests and sustained commitment from government, business and society more broadly to make progress.
Shell has a 50-year history of using scenarios to consider potential futures that can help us navigate uncertainty and make better decisions today. We hope this sketch will help shape the energy transition in the US.
