Avoid emissions
Avoid emissions by optimising the efficiency of our production process and product design and by aiming to embed circular economy thinking at the heart of our lubricants business.
We are exploring different and more sustainable packaging solutions, for example, new packaging formats or dispensing and refill solutions:
- We are using more recycled content in our bottles, where possible. For example, in Europe, 40% PCR content has been applied in all 1L, 4L and 5L bottles (apart from one customer)*. We are moving some of our larger plastic packaging, for example pails, to contain recycled resin.
- We are selling more products to our business customers in large formats or dispensers, thereby reducing the amount of packaging required per litre. We transport products in large intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) that can be washed and used again, for example in Europe, 8 out of 9 IBCs are reused by factories1. Reconditioning or re-using packs (such as reconditioned IBCs or drums) avoids both raw materials extraction and fabrication emissions and uses energy only to clean and repair the packs. Reconditioned steel drums give a 30-50% reduction in carbon footprint compared with new ones1. We are working to increase these amounts. We also continue to reduce the amount of material used in our packaging, for example, by making our drums lighter in weight.
- We are exploring different packaging concepts that are more sustainable (i.e. different materials or different supply chain models). For example, Ecobox, used in China is an alternative to traditional plastic packaging for motor oil for light-duty vehicles. It鈥檚 a plastic liner bag containing 24 quarts (~23 litres) of oil in a recyclable carton, which can reduce plastic usage in the packaging by more than 80% and CO2e2 emissions by more than 60%3.
- We have also started two pilot projects using sugar cane resin, which has carbon negative properties. New sugar cane resin lubricants bottles can reduce the carbon footprint of the production by 83% compared to our current specification.
