Carbon Compensation Programme

To achieve net-zero emissions, you need a robust decarbonisation plan. A plan that includes solutions to help your fleet avoid – and then reduce – the carbon emissions it generates wherever possible. Where that is not possible, Shell’s Carbon Compensation Programme can help you to mitigate your fleet’s unavoidable emissions and accelerate your decarbonisation journey.

Make carbon compensation work for your fleet

At Shell Fleet Solutions, we understand the many challenges facing today’s fleets on the road to a lower-carbon future. That is why we are developing a variety of ways to help – from fast, reliable electric vehicle (EV) charging to lower-emission fuels.

Yet, however strong your focus on sustainability, your fleet is likely to produce some unavoidable emissions even after adopting new fuels and technology.

Mitigating those emissions can play a key role in your low-carbon planning. To help you do this, we are investing in high-quality nature-based projects that protect and enhance natural ecosystems, capture CO₂ emissions, benefit local communities and improve biodiversity.

And the Shell Card makes the process simple and cost-effective.

Shell’s Carbon Compensation Programme for fleets

Shell’s Carbon Compensation Programme allows you to invest in independently approved, internationally recognised,1 carbon compensation projects in three different ways – simply by using the Shell Card to refuel.2

Fleet Full Carbon Compensation

Compensate all CO2 emissions from your fleet’s fuel consumption with your Shell Card to help you on your journey to net zero.

  • All your Shell Cards are enabled to compensate for the lifecycle emissions of your entire fleet’s fuel consumption
  • Cost of compensation is calculated per litre for all Shell Cards
  • Get one invoice for all your fuel and carbon compensation purchases
  • Receive an annual Shell carbon credit retirement certificate3
  • Enjoy all the Shell Card benefits for your fleet

Fleet Partial Carbon Compensation

Balance your decarbonisation goals and operational costs by choosing the number of Shell Cards that are opted in for CO2 compensation.4

  • Opt-in to CO2 compensation for as many or as few cards as you like
  • Cost of compensation is calculated per litre on selected cards only
  • One invoice for all Shell Cards, whether opted into CO2 compensation or not
  • Receive an annual Shell carbon credit retirement certificate3
  • Enjoy all the Shell Card benefits for your fleet

Standalone Carbon Credits

Purchase the carbon credits you need to compensate your fleet’s emissions without linking it to your fuel consumption.

  • Compensate for any source of unavoidable emissions across your business
  • Receive a one-off invoice for carbon credits purchased
  • Not linked to the Shell Card
  • Receive a Shell carbon credit retirement certificate3

Shell provides a carbon credit portfolio built around projects you can trust

Shell offers customers access to a portfolio of carbon credits, drawn from a range of projects. This includes nature-based solutions like conservation, afforestation, reforestation and other methodologies.

We choose projects that:

  • Meet the criteria of independent carbon credit standards
  • Deliver positive impacts on the communities around them by creating jobs, enhancing biodiversity or promoting gender equality
  • Maintain appropriate health, safety, security and social governance standards

How Shell’s Carbon Compensation Programme works

Shell tracks your fleet’s overall fuel consumption and calculates the associated wheel-to-wheel CO2e emissions.

Step 1

You opt-in to compensate the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions from your fleet. Your drivers use the Shell Card to refuel as usual.

Step 2

Shell tracks your fleet’s overall fuel consumption and calculates the associated well to-wheel CO2e emissions.

Step 3

Shell compensates for these emissions through its global portfolio of carbon compensation projects, including nature-based projects that support reforestation or the conservation of forests.

Step 4

Shell purchases carbon credits equivalent to the amount of your fleet’s emissions and issues a yearly retirement certification confirming that the fuel has been offset. Charges will be applied to your fleet’s account.

2Non-Shell card options are also available
3You’ll receive a Shell-branded carbon credit retirement certificate during Q1 of the year following your purchase
4You’ll receive one invoice covering all your Shell Cards regardless of how many you’ve applied CO₂ Compensation to – simplifying the process and avoiding unnecessary admin

CO2 compensation is not a substitute for switching to lower emission energy solutions or reducing the use of fossil fuels. Carbon credits are purchased and retired to compensate the calculated lifecycle CO2e emissions of the product. Although these carbon credits have been generated in accordance with international carbon standards, the compensation may not be exact.
