Shell Marine products align with Greek ship owner interests

Last April, Greek ship owners were given a preview of breakthrough work involving Shell Marine Products (SMP) to ensure that its cylinder oils continue to match the industry’s technical challenges at a customer event in Athens, hosted by Giorgio Barabino from SMP together with Dora Alamanou and Spyros Kanavas from Hellenic Mariners, SMP’s Exclusive Agent in Greece.

At the event, Henrik Rolsted, Senior Research Engineer, MAN Diesel & Turbo, acknowledged that cold corrosion remains a challenge when two stroke marine engines are optimised for fuel oil consumption. However, he said that the engine builder had evolved a wide range of countermeasures, citing Shell Alexia S6 as one of the BN 100 Cylinder Oils whose availability addressed the phenomenon.

As part of the following presentations, the 120 attendees heard how SMP’s Marine and Power Innovation Center in Hamburg had been central in developing Shell Alexia S6 to address cold corrosion. SMP’s OEM-aligned cylinder oil portfolio for two stroke engines now includes Alexia S3 (BN 25), Alexia S4 (BN 60), and Alexia 50 (BN 70) covering the full range of ship operating conditions.

SMP representatives also emphasised that they fully understood the engine performance issues customers were facing. Slow steaming, tighter environmental regulations and the required switching of fuels when entering emission control areas (ECAs), and low specific fuel oil consumption all had an impact on 2-stroke engine performance.

The event also offered an opportunity for greater insight to be given on SMP’s innovative approach to environmentally acceptable lubricants, required by the latest US EPA Vessel General Permit (VGP).

Shell Naturelle S4 oils and greases meet both the biodegradability and performance requirements set out in the VGP and have been approved by leading equipment and seal suppliers. SMP drew attention to the fact that its Shell Naturelle stern tube fluid and gear oils are distinct in the market for their use of fully-saturated esters.

These specially designed synthetic oils offer better performance, extended life and most importantly the best resistance to hydrolysis. Instead of forming into an emulsion, Shell Naturelle S4 Stern Tube Fluid 100 has excellent water separation characteristics, allowing water to drain away easily; neither hydrolysis nor biodegradation occur.

SMP Regional Sales Manager Giorgio Barabino, summed up by saying that SMP continues to invest in innovation in partnership with OEMs to develop new products and services that aim to benefit ship owners on both cost optimisation and simplicity of operations.
