The UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) seek to address the world’s biggest challenges, including ending poverty, making cities sustainable, and tackling climate change. Inspired by these goals, Shell Naturelle is formulated with renewable material choices and utilises more efficient manufacturing processes, which help to reduce and avoid emissions as well as lowering environmental impact.

Shell Naturelle is now carbon neutral* thanks to Shell’s global portfolio of nature-based carbon credits.

Here are five things to know about Shell Naturelle:

1. Shell Naturelle lubricants are suitable for use in many renewable energy sources, including offshore wind, solar-power farms and hydro-electric power generation, because of their low impact on ecosystems. As a company delivering on- and offshore wind developments, Shell has a first-hand understanding of wind industry challenges. 2. The Shell Naturelle range has been designed with city construction in mind. When compared to conventional mineral oil hydraulic fluids, Shell Naturelle has a much-reduced environmental impact, in the event of a leak or accidental spillage. A high proportion of Shell Naturelle grades are certified by EU Ecolabel, a recognised 3rd party validated ecolabel scheme by the Green Public Procurement. GPP is a voluntary instrument, but regarded as playing a key role in the EU's efforts to become a more resource-efficient economy1.

3. The Shell Naturelle range is designed to reduce the potential impact of leaks and spills on waterways and marine ecosystems. All Shell Naturelle grades comply with Vessel General Permit requirements (VGP)2, which states the importance of increasing the use of EALs in reducing the environmental impact of oily lubricant discharges on the aquatic ecosystem.

4. All Shell Naturelle products, where feasibly possible, contain a high percentage of renewable raw materials. Our hydraulic fluids are recognised by USDA BioPreferred programme3. The USDA Certified Biobased Product label displays a product's biobased content, which is the portion of a product that comes from a renewable source. Biobased products, through petroleum displacement, play an increasingly important role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

5. A high proportion of Shell Naturelle products hold the EU-Ecolabel certification4. EU-Ecolabel helps educate and raise awareness to help consumers make more sustainable purchasing choices and decisions. Established in 1992 and recognised across Europe and worldwide, the EU Ecolabel is a label of environmental excellence that is awarded to products and services meeting high environmental standards throughout their lifecycle.

*In participating locations. “Carbon neutral” indicates that Shell has engaged in a transaction where an amount of CO₂ equivalent to the CO₂e amount associated with the raw material extraction, transport, production, distribution, use and end-of-life of the product has been avoided as emissions through the protection of natural ecosystems or removed from the atmosphere through a nature-based process. CO₂e (CO₂ equivalent) refers to carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane and nitrogen oxides.
