ShellSol TD – isoparaffin synthetic hydrocarbon solvent
ShellSol TD is part of our isoparaffin range of aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents. Isoparaffins are synthetic solvents with a unique combination of narrow boiling range, flash point and evaporation rate. Its synthetic nature means the chemical composition is carefully controlled which in turn imparts consistent solvent performance.
Physical characteristics | Key technical properties | Value/unit | Main applications |
---|---|---|---|
Evaporation rate: Medium | Boiling range | 174-187° | Paints & Coatings |
Solvency Power: Medium | Flash point | 46° | Aerosol propellant |
Odour: Odourless | Aromatics content | 50 mg/kg | Extraction |
- | Benzene content | <3 mg/kg | Metalworking |
- | Aniline point | 84° | Detergents |
- | - | - | Cosmetics |
- | - | - | Textile cleaning |
Unlike most hydrocarbon solvents, which are distillation ‘cuts’ from crude oil refining, Isoparaffins are synthesised (chemically made) through an alkylation process. Because the feedstock and process conditions are carefully controlled, the resulting Isoparaffin composition, structure and properties are consistent and low in impurities.
ShellSol TD has little or no odour and a very narrow, medium boiling range (among Isoparaffins) that provide a unique combination of flash point and evaporation or drying performance. Its technical properties can also impart low surface tension characteristics and high oxidation stability for paints and coatings applications.

Before you do, please read the following essential information on doing business with us:
Safety
Safety is our number one priority. As well as providing customers with information on the safe and environmentally responsible use of our products, we are committed to ensuring that risks to the safety of our staff and our contractors are reduced to the lowest reasonably practicable level. We therefore require assurance from customers that appropriate safety standards for unloading and storage are met before we make deliveries (see the HSSE addenda in our general Terms & Conditions of Sale below). Our HSSE specialists can provide guidance on these standards.
Delivery modes
Customers can order and have the product delivered by Shell or collect the product themselves from one of our manufacturing facilities. Available modes of delivery include truck, rail, or inter-modal (separate conditions apply).
In case of customer collections, the Shell site minimum requirements apply. For collection by barge or tanker special safety/vetting standards and requirements apply.
Minimum order size
Deliveries by road should involve fully loaded trucks of minimum 22 tonnes made up of one product. If you collect the product from our site the minimum order size is 18 tonnes.
Payment
Shell’s standard payment method is Direct Debit 30 days from invoice.

Pentanes – aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents
Pentane is a high purity aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent primarily used as propellants in aerosols, as blowing agents in foams and as reaction media in polymerisation processes.
SBP 140/165 high purity de-aromatised hydrocarbon solvent
Stable compositions and a narrow boiling range give special boiling points solvents like SBP 140/165 specific evaporation and drying performance.
