Shell Catalysts & Technologies and Yilkins join forces to enhance SAF production
London, Â鶹´«Ă˝, December 2024: Shell Catalysts & Technologies and Yilkins are joining forces to drive the commercialisation of an integrated version of the Shell XTL1 Process, incorporating Yilkins’ torrefaction technology. This collaboration aims to offer a flexible and scalable solution for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from a diverse range of low-carbon feedstocks.
By Shell Catalysts & Technologies
The Shell XTL Process provides an integrated solution for producing SAF using Shell’s commercially proven Fischer–Tropsch technology. With SAF gaining prominence as a key decarbonisation option for the aviation industry, the Shell XTL Process offers a flexible pathway to producing bio-SAF, e-SAF, or a combination of both from a range of sustainable feedstocks.
Yilkins’ torrefaction technology is complementary to the Shell XTL Process as it transforms raw biomass, such as forestry and agricultural residues, into torrefied products. When integrated with the Shell XTL Process, it enables the production of bio-SAF from a wide range of biomass residues or, when combined with renewable hydrogen from solar and/or wind power, the production of bio-SAF and e-SAF.
Elise H. Nowee, President, Shell Catalysts & Technologies, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Yilkins to broaden the scope of the Shell XTL Process. Their torrefaction technology perfectly complements our capabilities, enabling SAF producers to access a greater diversity of feedstocks while supporting the global push for a lower-carbon future.”
Rob Voncken, CEO, Yilkins, stated: “Joining forces with Shell Catalysts & Technologies on the Shell XTL Process is an exciting step for Yilkins. By combining our torrefaction technology with Shell’s proven Fischer–Tropsch expertise, we are providing SAF producers with a flexible and efficient solution for producing SAF from sustainable feedstocks and contributing to decarbonising the aviation sector.”
