Introducing Shell Cariphalte AgeSafe

Our next-generation premium formula is designed to improve durability by inhibiting oxidation within bitumen to slow the rate at which it becomes stiff and brittle. Roads paved with Shell Cariphalte AgeSafe can then last up to 20% longer than conventional polymer modified bitumen. This reduces the need for and cost of road maintenance and consequently, disruption to road users. With fewer resurfacings required over the lifetime of the pavement, you can also avoid CO2e emissions by up to 10%.*

Laboratory studies showed that we were successful in slowing down the ageing across a range of problems that we tested. The statistical average showed that we were able to reduce the ageing by 20%.

Here鈥檚 where we鈥檝e put it to the test

With stakeholders across the supply chain including governments, asset owners, asphalt producers and contractors, Shell Cariphalte AgeSafe has been used in many different locations. These pavements are being monitored to gain a better understanding of how this solution can help road owners work towards decreasing the maintenance cycles over the pavement lifetime.

Conclusions from testing carried out on samples from 2021 (year zero) and 2022:

  •  Shell Cariphalte Ultra AgeSafe showed resistance to ageing after 1 year in service in terms of lower stiffness (G* at 25C).
  •  Shell Cariphalte Ultra AgeSafe showed lower oxygen uptake after 1 year which indicates lower ageing as compared to the control.
  • The stiffness values of cores taken after one year in service indicate that the asphalt stiffness (ITSM) is reduced for the mixture using Shell Cariphalte Ultra AgeSafe when compared to the control.
  • More sampling has been carried out in 2023, and testing is underway*.

Conclusions from testing carried out on samples from 2021 (year zero) and 2022:

  • Results showed little change in chemical analysis: O/C and C-O + S-O Index鈥 between Shell Cariphalte AgeSafe and the control.
  • There was also an improvement in rheological stiffness, less increase in G* compared to the control鈥.
  • Testing of cores taken in 2023 is underway*.

Conclusions from testing of samples taken in 2021 (year zero):

  • The mixture using Shell Cariphalte AgeSafe
    showed a lower tendency to ageing compared to conventional Cariphalte resulting in lower stiffness (ITSM) at different temperatures.
  • Testing of cores extracted after one-year in service, show slower evolution of asphalt stiffness (ITSM) and improved resistance to abrasion loss (Cantabro) of the mixture using Shell Cariphalte AgeSafe when compared to the control section.

*Road trials are being monitored and many more trials will be carried out to evaluate the benefits and performance of Shell Cariphalte AgeSafe technology. Laboratory evaluations are continuing including the use of Shell鈥檚 new pavement testing facility at the Shell Technology Centre in Bangalore.
