The less time aircraft spend on the ground refuelling, the more they can spend in the air. As the demand for aviation has grown with bigger aircraft requiring more fuel, Shell has worked with industry partners to improve efficiency and deliver more time flying.

From the 1930s aircraft grew ever larger and flew further to meet the growing demand for flight. Shell Aviation kept pace by developing high capacity refuelling trucks, culminating in a vehicle capable of refuelling the 747 Jumbo Jet.

In the 1950s, Shell Aviation pioneered the development of the underground hydrant system to bring great efficiency and safety to aircraft refuelling. By 1957 Shell had installed over 100 hydrants at airports across the world.
